VMware has revealed the general availability of a tranche of new product releases aimed at helping IT operations teams to run, manage and secure both their traditional and modern applications more efficiently.

These new releases build upon VMware’s Cross-Cloud Architecture which delivers consistent deployment models, security policies, visibility, and governance for all applications, running both on- and off-premises, regardless of the underlying cloud, hardware platform or hypervisor.

Key features in the new offerings include:

  • vSphere 6.5 – delivers a simplified customer experience, comprehensive built-in security, and a universal applications platform to support all application types including containerised applications. There are new features in the vCenter Server Appliance, new REST-based APIs, an HTML5-based vSphere Client and virtual machine encryption. Integrated Containers, a new feature of vSphere 6.5, is scheduled to be available at the end of 2016
  • vSAN 6.5 – adds support for containers and physical workloads, eliminates networking hardware costs from two-node Remote Office/Branch Office (ROBO) configurations and adds all-flash hardware support to vSAN Standard Edition. In addition, a new ‘VMware Ready for vSAN’ certification programme is also now in place to provide customers with the confidence that partner solutions will seamlessly deploy, run and interoperate with vSAN
  • vRealize – the functionality of the integrated vRealize cloud management platform has been expanded with new out-of-the-box support for Microsoft Azure. Additionally, it will enable IT to discover, deploy and manage containers with new container management capabilities
  • Cloud Services – includes new hybrid cloud solutions for the enterprise, including beta versions of a new vCloud Air disaster recovery solution and Cloud Foundation on vCloud Air

These developments clearly recognise the growing importance of containers to development teams when building new software projects, with vSphere 6.5 supporting the running of modern containerised applications, SAN 6.5 supporting containerised and physical workloads and vRealize Automation 7.2 introducing new container management capabilities.
